sprouts. The word "alfalfa"
means best food it is a rich source of vitamins minerals and proteins,
e.g. 100mg of the vitamin B17 is contained in 100g of alfalfa sprouts,
they contain every essential amino acid.
Loose Sprouting method -
Mix small sprouts such as Alfalfa
seeds with Red Clover or Broccoli with larger sprouts such as Radish or Fenugreek.
The idea is to mix larger sprouts with
smaller sprouts, if you grow just Alfalfa or Red Clover by themselves they
will tend to clump together very tightly this can lead to overheating and also
means that the sprouts in the centre find it hard to get rid of their seed
husks and also to become green.
Soak overnight in filtered water mixed with a small squirt of probiotic
nutrient, alternatively just use liquid seaweed, and sprout in a fine holed/slotted colander. If you do not have a
colander with fine enough slots, if they are too large then the small seeds
will be lost the ones that we use will handle down to the size of Alfalfa Broccoli
and Red Cabbage, but the Red Clover is too small, so when using this seed or if
your colander has larger slots, after
soaking overnight transfer the seeds into a fine mesh bag, like what you
use for washing delicates in the washing machine, you leave it in this mesh bag
soaking in nutrients once a day and rinsing and leaving it in the colander to
drain, do this for 3 or 4 days and then transfer to the smaller colander.
At about 4 or 5 days you can begin to wash the floating seed husks over the edge
of the colander when it is full, do this every time at the end of your daily soak
rinse cycle and you will end up with very clean sprouts.
When they are at the stage of
eating then if you are soaking and rinsing in the morning then leave the cover off the colander during the
day so that as you are using them the top layer of sprouts are not soaking
wet and then last thing at night place the cover so they don’t dry out too much
and also protects from crawling insects.
You will also see in the
pictures below and in our different sprouting kit’s an option of using a two-stage colander system whereby you
transfer from the small to the large for the last few days, using a large
colander with larger holes makes rinsing and dehusking even sit more simple.
The large colander that we supply comes with a cover it also has another very
useful feature and that is it has slots at the top of the sides of the base,
what this means is that not only does it increase the oration ie if you do not
want to put it at an angle but more importantly when you are rinsing it under
the tap it will not overflow, so as so often happens if you just stop to do
something else while the colander is rinsing you don’t have to worry that you
going to lose the sprouts over the size and down the drain, believe me this is
