The Indoor Vegetable Garden - Small.
An Indoor Herb Garden based on a modular, highly flexible LED Plant stand. Patent Pending.
The principal function of this Vegetable Garden is to grow Micro-Greens such as Broccoli, Cress, Radish, SnowPea, Wheatgrass, Buckwheat, Sunflower etc it does this in a most economical way, in terms of power & space.
Vertical gardens greatly increase the available growing area eg fully configured, this system gives the equivalent of greater than 1 sq metre or 11 Sq Ft, of growing/planting space, up to 4 times the amount of an Aero system. We use a fine textured coconut fibre mixed with Azomite and Dolomite as the growing medium, we use organic Liquid Seaweed with Humate for supplying nutrients to the plant & then to you. We also supply a clear Perspex germination cover, to further simplify the growing process. All of these Micro-Green sprouts are ready to eat in 1 to 3 weeks, giving you a continuous supply of nutritious fresh salad greens.
The system can also be used to grow other longer-term salad greens, however this is not its best function and we would recommend that you look at the Indoor Vegetable Garden-Large, which has the ability to use higher intensity grow-lights which will give you a better result for this type of growing.
How the System Works
The system consists of a clear Perspex stand, the base kits comes with 2 or 3 shelves with lights, you can add an extra shelf on top. Each shelf also supports the LED grow lights for the plants on the shelf below. The top shelf, is being used as a germination rack where the lights below are supplying warmth for this germination stage.
To view some of the possible configurations and the number and type of lights used, see the diagrams at the top.
The trays, which locked into and form the bridge between one side of the shelf & the other, can be used in one of 3 ways.
1 - Trays used to grow Micro-greens - this is where you fill the trays with the growing medium and grow the Micro-Greens in the trays, you can choose from a 47.5cm/18.7” or 57.5cm/22.6” long tray, we would suggest that shorter tray is the better option as the longer tray is not so easy to deal with. As we said we use a fine textured coconut fibre mixed with Azomite and Dolomite, with the addition of a high quality liquid seaweed, you can use other mediums i.e. soil from your garden or fine textured seedling mix.
2 - Trays used to support smaller round trays to grow Micro-greens – this is where you use the longer tray 57.5cm/22.6” which has a smaller stray inserted inside, this allows you to place a 3x200 mm diameter round trays on top meaning that the rectangular trays stay in place and you just move the round trays around, the advantage of doing it this way is that you are dealing with smaller units which require a little bit more time to prepare but they make watering a little bit easier and when it comes to harvesting you are taking a smaller module to the kitchen i.e. less space and clean-up is a little bit easier.
3 - Trays used as a common reservoir for larger pots - this is where you would be growing 1 to 2 pots of larger longer term Herbs on the bottom shelf. Here you also have the option of hanging lights from in front of the plants as well is from the shelf above. This is not the main function for these particular lights so with the Herbs that require intense light then we would suggest you look at the IVG large which can support the heavier and more powerful lights.
Each shelf can be fitted with up to 10 lights, the trick is keeping the plants as close as possible to the light source, in this case low powered LED lights, 1 Power Supply for 12 Lights.
The basic configuration i.e. consists of 2 stand kits.
Base Kit No1 has 2 shelves plus a germination shelf on top, it is therefore not as tall and is designed for the kitchen bench top with cupboards above, the standard distance between kitchen bench-top & cupboard being 53 cm/21”. Its height is 48cm/19”, giving enough room for the germination tray on the top shelf.
Base Kit No2 has 3 shelves plus a germination shelf on top, it is taller and designed for the kitchen bench tops/table-tops/bookshelves where you have at least 64 cm/25” plus an extra 30 cm if you want to include germination tray on top.
You can add an extra shelf on top of both base units, adding an extra 16.5cm/6” to the height. Both units have the same Width & Depth ie 60cm/23.6”W x 21cm/8.3”D.
Trays & Pots purchased separately.
