This clear rectangular Perspex Sprout Germination cover is used for the germination stage when growing MicroGreens such as Radish, Broccoli, Cress, Mustard, Field Pea, Wheatgrass etc, it is best to keep the seeds covered for the first few days so that they do not dry out, this clear Perspex cover has holes to allow for air flow, but not so much that it will dry out the seeds. It also saves space by allowing you to stack them one on top of each other while they are in this germination phase.
When they begin to Sprout, you can un-stack them and still leave the cover on and light will now be able to get through, and then remove the cover once the sprouts begin to lift the lid.
Sometimes you may find it beneficial to place a little bit of extra weight, because some of the MicroGreens appreciate to have something to push against as they push their roots into the growing medium. In a normal situation seeds that are planted a couple of centimetres under the ground have the weight of the ground above to push against, the way I achieve this is with a paperclip at each end as shown in the picture.
You leave the lid on for different lengths of time depending on the sprout type, e.g. the shortest time is with wheatgrass which grows very quickly, you only leave the cover on for 2 days, but for other sprouts, e.g. the longest time, at the bottom picture we have sunflower sprouts, these can be a little bit fiddly to harvest in that you need to cut them while they just have their 1st 2 sets of leaves, the 2nd set of leaves are not nearly as tasty, also you want them to come up together, also they can flip the seed husk off and make a bit of a mess, so keeping the lid on as long as possible means that a lot of the husk has already been shed, the seeds that are being lifted by the other shoots have a chance to push against the cover and get their roots into the growing medium, so in this particular situation I have added an extra 2 clips in the middle to keep it as tight as possible for up to 4 or 5 days.
This is for the 475mm Sprout tray, there is an extension piece for the 575mm tray, see below.
