With this kit we are now giving you the choice of choosing to grow your wheatgrass in shallow self watering pots (165mm diam. x 90mm high, blue, white or pewter), or shallow rectangular trays (475mm OR 575mm) x 174mm x 30mm, col - terracotta.
Personally I find the shallow self watering pots more attractive and convenient (especially for watering), however some people prefer to use the trays as it gives them greater quantities, the 475mm tray is equivalent to about 3 pots, & the 575mm tray is equivalent to about 4 pots, the method used is slightly different, please refer to the Micro-Greens sprouting kit. the main difference being that you use less growing medium, and instead of covering the seeds with the coconut fibre you use the special germination cover. And the watering is not quite as convenient as it is with the self watering pots.
The 4 rectangular trays and 1 germination cover gives a greater yield, the germination cover keeps the seeds moist while sprouting & saves on not needing to be covered with potting mixture, I find them very useful as you can see what's happening to the seeds, and they also provide something for the seeds to push against, helping their roots penetrate the growing medium.
Both of these systems fit perfectly in our new Perspex stand, because the trays take up less room you can add an extra shelf and get 4 trays of (475mm OR 575mm) length.
Using as stainless steel plant stand you can fit 9 of these trays crosswise giving an even denser growing situation the 475mm tray will fit longways on this stand but the 575mm tray will only fit our Stainless plant stand when placed across the shelf, as in the bottom picture, it is a squeeze fit ie the stand is 520mm wide & the 3 trays side by side are 522mm, the trays are flexible so it can be done but unfortunately not a perfect fit. if you would like to use the stand this particular way, I would suggest using a sharp cutting blade to scrape out 2 grooves on either edge of the trays, this is because the trays rest up against 2x5mm stainless steel rods on either side of the stand so it's relatively easy to gain the extra few millimetres required, just make sure when you are doing this you scrape the blade away from you (the picture shows using an older tray which was smaller & shallower, it also shows an insert of the scraping process)
So just select which type of container you would like and its colour.
With this kit you also have the choice of wheat seeds or barley seeds.
Both containers are especially friendly for growing indoors(less problem with pests, & at your fingertips when needed), the customised shallow self watering pots are designed specifically for vertical sprouting:- this is the simplest method each pot will give you 40+mls of wheatgrass juice which is equivalent to 2 shots at the juice bar and will cost you less then $0.50 including postage(i.e. $0.30 per shot). The system uses a highly absorbent loose coconut fibre that has been washed in freshwater i.e. no soil born bacteria, and mixed with Azomite and Dolomite, as a growing medium, resulting in very small amounts being used. It is lightweight, quick and easy to spread, planting out three pots takes approximately 12 minutes, and refills come in 12ltr or 24ltr. If you have a backyard and compost or worm farm facilities then you can recycle the growing medium or just use soil from your garden to further reduce your costs. If you're growing outdoors you will need to construct netting, or use our Plastic net that attaches to any of our bracket systems, or our modular plant stand, to protect your wheat grass from birds, mice etc. Our system is tailored for the city dweller with minimum time and space but would still like the benefits of growing their own wheat grass.
Apart from all of the benefits of wheatgrass by itself see (Sprouting and Benefits of Wheatgrass Juice.pdf).
Growing Outdoors - If you're growing outdoors you will need to construct netting, or use our Plastic net that attaches to any of our bracket systems, or you may wish to take a look at our modular plant stand, it also has the option of attaching netting, (see picture) you will find that if you try to grow wheat grass outside and unless you have a very vigilant cat to protect them, sooner or later some sort of wildlife e.g. rats, mice, possums, pigeons will get wind of what you are doing and come to join the feast. The stands are also long enough to accept the 575mm trays. Plant-Stand-Modular
The Seaweed that we use is Certified Organic & is extracted at lower temperatures than other products, meaning that more of the naturally occurring plant growth hormones remain active, it also contains Potassium Humate which comes from Gippsland in Victoria, described as 50 million year old compost, the best of its type in the world, containing a rich abundance of prehistoric minerals and trace elements. The seaweed comes from storm-carst kelp freshly collected on the coast of Tasmania. Kelp is the grass of the sea-world, it contains many of the micro-nutrients necessary to sustain life.
We also include Magnesium Chloride The importance of this element in the health of the body cannot be overstated. The highest quality Magnesium available, this ancient mineral is extracted from the lower layers of the Zechstein prehistoric sea(250 million years old), we mix this in with the liquid seaweed. It can also be used as a salt substitute i.e. mix with water & spray on your food or trans-dermal i.e. rub on your skin or use in a foot bath. Magnesium is the central atom in the Chlorophyll molecule, which has almost the same structure as Haemoglobin i.e. the red blood cell, another reason why greens are a must.
We supply 8ltrs of premium grade fine washed loose coconut fibre, premixed with Azomite and Dolomite this mix is designed for growing seedlings which means it is fine textured without any lumps which makes it very easy to spread.
· Azomite a mineral and trace element supplement for plants and animals. It is not a typical rock dust. It is a very complicated product in the sense that it contains 67 + chemical elements, along with trace and rare earth minerals. The product is a natural volcanic ash, it has been subjected to rigorous testing and has been approved for use in large-scale Organic Plant and Livestock production in the US. Adding this to our fertilizer soup, means that if the seeds didn't contain it, & the Seaweed/Humate didn't, then we certainly have it covered now.
· Dolomite is finely crushed limestone a mix of Calcium and Magnesium(36%), ensuring that your wheatgrass and sprouts, and therefore you, have a high level of Calcium and Magnesium, in a form that your body can easily absorb. As well as keeping the whole environment alkaline.
With this kit you get:- 2kg of biodynamic/organic Wheat or 1kg of biodynamic/organic Barley seeds, 8ltrs CocoFibre(mixed with Azomite & Dolomite), 1ltr of liquid seaweed concentrate, a 1ltr plastic sauce bottle(to make it easy to pour your liquid seaweed), 140gmMgCh, a sticky insect trap and detailed instructions, 9 (blue, white or pewter) shallow self watering pots with detachable saucers OR 4 shallow rectangular trays + 1 germination cover.
If you are going to grow these inside next to a sunny window then have a look at the Stainless steel stand, or clear Perspex stands, see below, which has been specially designed with staggered shelf heights to make the most use of this valuable space. Plant Stands
If you are a growing outside you will still get great results it's just that in the cooler months it will take longer. Our modular aluminium plant stand with stainless steel slats using 40cm gaps between each shelf, gives you a very good option for doing this outside, it also has options for keeping possums and other hungry creatures away. Bottom Pic. on the left. Modula Plant Stand
We have also given you the option of either choosing Wheat seed or Barley seed, some people have a wheat intolerance, 98% of this intolerance is due to gluten and has nothing to do with the juice from the wheat shoot, but sometimes people just prefer the Barley the main differences is that Barley is more expensive, it has a more bitter taste and is slower growing, nutritionally they are almost identical.
Can't ship seeds or potting mix to WA please purchase items separately.
