Shallow rectangular trays 575x175x30mmOD are ideal for growing Micro Greens such as Broccoli, Mustard, Cress, etc. Because these trays have a depth of 30mm then they can also be used for growing Wheatgrass and even Field pea. For growing area 1 tray is equal to approx 4 x 165mm Diam SW Pots.

You can see in the picture where one of the trays is used as a cover during the germination stage.

So how many do I need? If you are growing wheat grass using one rectangular tray per day we would suggest 9 growing trays, and three lids, ie 12 trays, planting three new trays twice a week. If you would like to consume half a tray per day you can get away with 9 trays plus 3 lids and planting 3 trays once a week.

The trays will fit easily on our stainless steel Plant Stand, either one per shelf or as seen in the lower picture, you can put them across the shelf and have three per shelf, this will give you a very dense growing environment.

So which tray is best for you:-

the trays are exactly the same except one is approximately 100mm longer than the other, three of our Self-Watering pots will fit in both trays, the advantage of the long tray is that you can space the pots apart, this allows the plants to spread out a little bit more and share the available light more evenly, however it does take up more room. As we said previously the larger tray is too long for our Stainless steel stand, you can mount them across, but you would have to be careful not to bump them or allow them to be subject to any gusts of wind, both trays will fit onto our new Perspex Stand.

So summing up in most cases the shorter length will be sufficient but for those wanting to grow large quantities of wheat grass the larger tray will be popular, it will also be very valuable when growing salad greens in our new 48W light stands, where it is will support 4 of our 130mm pots as against 3 in the smaller tray.

The longer tray can also be used underneath our 600mm Self-Watering planter boxes, for instance if you wanted to use them inside you could use one of these trays underneath to make doubly sure that there is no possibility of spillage.
