This kit contains all you need to successfully grow most of our sprouting seeds eg Wheatgrass, Snow pea, Field pea, Mustard, Cress, Broccoli, Radish, Fenugreek, Sunflower, Buckwheat etc where the sprouts are grown vertically ie in a medium where the seeds are placed on the surface ie not covered, therefore only needing a very shallow growing medium.
Purchase the seeds you require separately see below.
In this kit you get:-
4 Round Trays, these are the trays that you use to grow the sprouts in. They are 200mmD and black in colour.
2 Germination lids these are placed on top of the trays, & can be placed on top of each other, during the first 5 days, made from clear food-grade Perspex, they have narrow slots which allow the seeds to breath, but not so much that they dry out. So they perform 2 functions one is to keep the seeds moist, the other one is to allow the seeds to have something to push against, imagine a seed being planted under the ground it has the weight of the dirt above it to press against as it pushes its root downwards into the soil, it also allows you to stack one tray on top of the other further saving space during the germination stage.
A 750ml Spray Bottle, this is supplied to make it easy for you to spray the top of the seeds before covering them up for their germination phase, especially important for the smaller seeds such as Broccoli, Cress, Radish which are too messy to spread if you pre-soak them.
Seaweed concentrate 1 ltr, the 1 we use is Certified Organic & is extracted at lower temperatures than other products, meaning that more of the naturally occurring plant growth hormones remain active, it also contains Potassium Humate which comes from Gippsland in Victoria, described as 50 million year old compost, the best of its type in the world, containing a rich abundance of prehistoric minerals and trace elements. The seaweed comes from storm carst kelp freshly collected on the coast of Tasmania. Kelp is the grass of the sea-world, it contains many of the micro-nutrients necessary to sustain life.
200gm of Magnesium Chloride - the importance of this element in the health of the body cannot be overstated. The highest quality Magnesium available, this ancient mineral is extracted from the lower layers of the Zechstein prehistoric sea(250 million years old), we mix this in with the liquid seaweed. It can also be used as a salt substitute i.e. mix with water & spray on your food or transdermally i.e. rub on your skin or use in a foot bath. Magnesium is the central atom in the Chlorophyll molecule, which has almost the same structure as Haemoglobin i.e. the red blood cell, another reason why greens are a must.
2 x 8ltr washed Coconut fibre blocks – we used to supply a non-compressed ie loose coco but have now switched to these blocks. The advantage of these is that they are cheaper ie you now get 16ltrs instead of 8, they are cheaper to ship, but more importantly they are more convenient. Before you use them they must be rehydrated, which requires a little bit of time 10mins, but in the process you also add the seaweed & if you like the Dolomite & Azomite, the mix is 3lts of liquid for 1 block, this gives you a very moist mix, what this means is that when you come to plant a new tray of sprouts you save 2 steps & halve the time eg no seaweed & no water, the simple process is now add coco fibre to tray, smooth surface, spread seeds, spray with water & MgCl solution, add cover, under 5mins including clean-up.
450gm Azomite - a mineral and trace element supplement for plants and animals. It is not a typical rock dust. It is a very complicated product in the sense that it contains 67 + chemical elements, along with trace and rare earth minerals. The product is a natural volcanic ash, it has been subjected to rigorous testing and has been approved for use in large-scale Organic Plant and Livestock production in the US. Adding this to our fertilizer soup, means that if the seeds didn't contain it, & the Seaweed/Humate didn't, then we certainly have it covered now.
450gm Dolomite - finely crushed limestone a mix of Calcium and Magnesium(36%), ensuring that your wheatgrass and sprouts, and therefore you, have a high level of Calcium and Magnesium, in a form that your body can easily absorb. As well as keeping the whole environment alkaline.
And of course Detailed Instructions with step-by-step pictures.
Which Vertical sprouting method is best for you?
200mm Round Trays
Personally I think this is the best solution if you're needs are small and you like a lot of variety, if you have limited space than you can use one of our 4 shelf stands and will be shortly releasing a lighting option on a new stand specifically for these, Indoor Vegetable Garden-S1.
With the use of a combination of rectangular trays they can be used with the stands that are designed for the rectangular trays and also with Indoor Vegetable Garden-S2.
Also being smaller than the trays they are easier to manage when you take them from their growing area to the kitchen.
475 or 575mm rectangular Trays
The advantage of the rectangular trays is that they are bigger basically equivalent to 3 of the round trays, so quicker to water and quicker to plant out.
If you are going to use the rectangular trays I would suggest you use the 475mm as it is a much more manageable size, I would really only recommended 575mm for those people who want to grow wheat grass and would like to maximise the amount that they grow, this larger size is also better for holding pot plants. The Indoor Vegetable Garden-S2 growing system is tailored for this tray type.
See Below for sprouting without coco fibre.
There is a specially designed tray or grill that sits inside the 475mm rectangular trays and the 200 and diameter round trays to allow you to grow the FieldPea and Snowpea without the use of potting mix, such as coconut fibre, but still have the advantages of using the nutrients, such as the liquid Seaweed, Dolomite, Azomite and Magnesium Chloride. When you use them with the smaller seats you to spread a small amount of coconut fibre over the grill sow the seeds one fourth of the holes, the roots will quickly go through the coco-fibre through the holes and into the liquid below, using about 60% less coco-fibre.
We have not included them in the base kit so as to keep the base price as low as possible, you may choose to add one to the kit to see whether you prefer this method. Then if you like it then you can get more next time.
There are quite a few advantages of using these over using a growing medium some of these are
· Not having to deal with growing medium, saving you money and space for storage.
· There is less material to throw away or recycle at the end of the growing process.
· It is much easier to add water and top up with extra nutrients if required.
There are a couple of disadvantages
· The cleanup process requires you to clean 2 items instead of one, an extra minute or 2
· in the cleanup process the roots have to be cut away from the grill whereas in the tray they all just fall out with the growing medium.
· A little bit more attention has to be given to the 1st 4 days to make sure the seeds do not dry out before the roots have found their way into the liquid below, Snowpea FieldPea only.
If purchased from WA we will ship minus the coco fibre, as we can’t ship seeds or potting mix to WA.
